Feeling stuck and unfulfilled in your current job? You’re not alone. If you’re constantly asking yourself, “Should I stay or go?”—you already know the answer. The real question is: what comes next, and how do you move forward with clarity and confidence?
This post will walk you through the first two steps in creating a meaningful career transition plan: letting go of what’s not working, and setting a powerful vision for what you truly want.
Step 1: Get Honest About Why You Want to Leave a Job You Hate
If you’re reading this, it’s because something in your career isn’t right. You might be feeling burned out, underappreciated, overwhelmed, or simply bored. Whatever the reason, your intuition is telling you something needs to change.
Start here:
- Make a list of everything about your current role that isn’t working.
- Include daily stressors, relationship dynamics, lack of growth, or anything else you never want to experience again.
This isn’t about being negative—it’s about getting clear so you don’t repeat the same patterns in your next job.
Step 2: Set a Vision for What You Want
This is the part most people skip—but it’s essential.
Ask yourself:
- What does your next ideal role look and feel like?
- What would you do if you already had the credentials?
- What would you do if other people’s opinions didn’t matter?
- Where would you be?
- Who would you be working with, helping, serving, etc?
- What is a working title for your ideal next role?
- If you’ve worked for years at your current role, what is the next level up?
- What are the next two levels up?
- If you’re changing careers, what is your ideal role in your new career?
Dream big. You can scale your vision later—for now, allow yourself to imagine something better.
Step 3: Set Big Goals
The first step is to get out of your own way and actually see yourself not just at the next level up—but multiple levels beyond it.
Visualize yourself thriving in a new role with minimal sidestepping. Once you can picture yourself in that next job, everything shifts:
You stop saying, “I can’t because…” and start saying:
“Okay, I want this. How do I make it happen—and who can help me?”
Write down everything you want and everything you see. Revisit it often. Your vision becomes your foundation for moving forward.
Leaving a job you hate isn’t easy—but it is possible. Getting honest about what’s not working and allowing yourself to dream big are the first steps in a successful career pivot.
