You can’t sell yourself into a new job if you don’t know what makes you great. The next step in your career transition is getting clear on the strengths, skills, and talents you bring to the table—even if they’ve been overlooked or undervalued in the past.
Let’s uncover your most valuable strengths and transferable skills for a successful career pivot.
Step 1: Spot the Clues
Look at your past experiences:
- What do people consistently compliment you on?
- What have you been recognized or thanked for at work?
- What do others come to you for help or advice with?
Your answers to these questions really illustrate your impact from one environment to the next.
They are a big deal!
These are your natural strengths and should absolutely inform your job search.
If you don’t see them as such, then you are in the wrong environment and likely around the wrong people.
Step 2: Own What You’ve Done—Even If It Wasn’t Official
A huge part of my job as a Career Transition Specialist is helping my clients see what they’ve accomplished. So many people downplay their accomplishments because they weren’t part of their official job title.
Stop doing that. You did the work, so claim it no matter what title you held at the time.
In what ways are you already displaying the skills and/or doing the work functions for your aspired new field?
Here are some examples:
- Leading a team without being the “manager”
- Handling conflict in the workplace
- Mentoring or training new employees
These are all transferable skills that matter to future employers.
Why This Matters
Identifying your career strengths gives you the confidence and clarity to apply for roles you might have thought were out of reach. Hiring managers want to see clear, transferable value—and this is how you show them.
Knowing your strengths isn’t just about boosting your confidence—it’s about preparing to present yourself powerfully in a competitive job market. When you can articulate what makes you valuable, you stand out.
